So, you’ve made the decision to sell your home? Well, preparing your property for sale is one of the most important elements – and that includes decluttering.
Clutter is any accumulation of things that impedes the flow of energy in your home. There is nothing more unappealing to a potential buyer than a house that is full of your ‘stuff’. In feng shui, this robs a home of its qi and distorts the energy because it is distracting. The presence of clutter also implies you have a lot of baggage being left around. Clearing clutter will help with any emotional blockages you may be having about moving.
You need to allow a buyer to imagine themselves living happily in the home. The less personal or used your house appears, the better.
The impact of good feng shui
From a feng shui perspective decluttering attracts strong and harmonious feng shui energy. Attracting this positive energy is super important when you are trying to sell your home.
You know how some houses just ‘feel right’ while others don’t? Some properties even have a ‘bad’ feeling about them, one that makes you want to get out right away. Homes that ‘feel right’ are the ones that draw you in and make you want to stay. This is what effective feng shui is all about.
And what is the essence of feng shui? Decluttering! You don’t want lots of clutter slowing down the energy of your home.
My perspective as a real estate agent
As a real estate agent and an energy healer there are many times when I have visited a client’s property and have noticed an object that seems to resonate with the past and I can see that it is stopping the homeowners from moving into the future.
Even though not all agents would sense this type of thing as deeply as I would, they still sense something, and this is one of the reasons why real estate agents always say less is more.
Everything has a shelf life
You can’t hang onto everything. So, remove as much as you can and either recycle these things or give them away. It is a universal law that everything needs to keep moving and evolving. The energy needs to flow.
Clear a quarter to a third of the clutter, including personal knick-knacks, family photos, collectibles, furniture and other belongings, from your home. Do it room by room, drawer by drawer, shelf by shelf. Anything you don’t use or don’t love can be considered clutter. Throw it all away or give it to St Vinnies, shelters, schools and so on.
If it’s not loved and if people don’t use it, it needs to go. Your home needs to feel spacious with open floor spaces, tabletops and shelves. You want to tone down any busy energy and allow for clarity and focus.
To the best of your ability, show how the space can be used but don’t overdo it with personal touches. Allow a buyer to imagine themselves living happily in the house – they do not want to witness your personal life.
